atenco/oaxaca

the violence of 2006 kicked off in atenco mexico on mother's day when local flower vendors were ejected due to a walmart coming in. the massive police invasion was very violent, with two protesters dead and a slew of rapes reported to have been committed by the police. to date no police have been prosecuted yet many citizens are still in jail.

i find something profound in wal-mart's roll, and the wal-mart star reminds me of the chinese communist star, an irony in all the made in china crap that has turned our economy upside down. and the fascism that reminds one of tienamin square.

the summer saw a massive teachers strike in oaxaca mexico which culminated by fall when american journalist brad will was murdered, documenting his own grisly death on film~ [link]

this happened a couple days before day of the dead which gave a duality to the season i have been wanting to paint ever since, and in time for this year's dia de los muerte.
